It has various medicinal properties, including treatment of the digestive, reproductive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Emoliente was introduced to Peru during the colonial era as a medicinal drink or herbal tea. In Lima, it became so popular that there was practically an emoliente vendor's stand on every corner.
Preparations
An emollient is a drink prepared from roasted barley grains, medicinal herb extracts, sugar, and lemon juice. Among the most commonly used herbs are horsetail, flaxseed, alfalfa, plantain, and boldo.
In recent years, emollients—especially those sold on the streets from street carts—have been incorporating a number of medicinal plants, some of which have been chosen for their diuretic properties. These include cat's claw, maca, chancapiedra, dragon's blood, muña, and aloe vera. [Some so-called "special" emollients may also include pollen, honey, carob, corn silk, spices (such as cinnamon), and infusions made with fruit (quince or pineapple) or potato peels.
